Your flight out of Miami is cancelled. Rebook or take a refund, what the airline owes you when the cancellation was its fault, and where to spend the night at or near MIA.

Late in the terminal

**Get onto a new flight first, then sort out the night.** Join the line at your airline’s counter and search for a new flight in its app while you wait. Our [airline directory](https://miaairportguide.com/airlines/) shows each airline’s concourse and check-in counters at MIA.

## Rebook or take a refund

| Choice | When it makes sense | What to ask for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Take the next flight the airline offers | You still need to travel soon | A confirmed seat, not standby, and your bag moved to the new flight |
| Cancel and take a refund | You no longer want to travel, or you’ve booked another way | A refund of the unused ticket and optional fees, such as a paid seat or checked bag |

The US Department of Transportation’s refund rule covers nonrefundable fares when a flight to, from or within the US is cancelled or significantly changed and you turn down the rebooking and any voucher or credit offered. Fees for services you didn’t get, such as a paid seat, come back as well. For a credit card purchase, the rule counts a refund as prompt when it arrives within 7 business days of your request. If a travel agency or booking site charged your card, request the refund through it, and the airline must tell the agency without delay whether you qualify.

## Ask whether the airline caused it

Ask the agent whether the airline caused the cancellation. The answer decides what you can ask for next. The government’s flightrights.gov dashboard lists what US airlines commit to when they cause one: a meal or meal voucher when the wait for a new flight runs 3 hours or more, and for an overnight cancellation a free hotel room and a ride to it, at every airline listed except Frontier. Ask for those before you leave the counter. The dashboard lists US airlines only, so ask a foreign airline’s agent for its own policy.

## Where to spend the night

- **The [Miami International Airport Hotel](https://miaairportguide.com/hotels/)** is inside the terminal, before security on Level 2 in [Central Terminal E](https://miaairportguide.com/terminals/central/). You can walk to it from check-in without going outside. The hotel’s number is (305) 871-4100.
- **[Wait n’ Rest sleep rooms](https://miaairportguide.com/amenities/sleeping-rest/)** are after security in Concourse D, near Gate D15, and MIA lists them as open 24 hours. They suit an early rebooking, since you need a same-day flight with access to Concourse D. Each suite has a private shower.
- **Hotel shuttles** for off-airport hotels pick up on Arrivals, Level 1, at the curbside zones MIA lists by doors 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 15, 20, 23, 24 and 28. Our list of [hotels near MIA with a free shuttle](https://miaairportguide.com/guides/airport-hotels-near-mia-with-free-shuttle/) gives each one’s hours.
- **Budget rooms you pay for yourself** are in [our budget hotel guide](https://miaairportguide.com/guides/cheapest-places-stay-near-miami-airport/), which compares each candidate’s road distance, shuttle limits and the cost of getting back to the terminal at 4 a.m.
- For a night in the terminal, [our guide to sleeping at MIA](https://miaairportguide.com/guides/sleeping-at-miami-airport-overnight/) covers the beds, overnight food and shops, and water refill stations on each side of security, and the [Avianca and TAP Portugal Lounge](https://miaairportguide.com/lounges/avianca-tap-lounge-j/) across from J6 lists 24-hour opening for eligible passengers.

If you have a checked bag, ask the agent whether it will be held for your new flight or returned to you at baggage claim on Level 1. If the airline keeps it, you won’t have it tonight, so ask now for anything you need from it, such as medicine.

## Tomorrow morning

Rebooked on an early flight? The regular checkpoints open between 3:30 a.m. and 4:15 a.m., and Checkpoint 9, for H and J gates, is listed as open 24 hours. Our guide to [how early to arrive at MIA](https://miaairportguide.com/guides/how-early-should-you-arrive-at-miami-international/) works out your arrival time from your airline’s check-in area and concourse. If you paid for a hotel or meal yourself, keep every receipt for the claim.
