MIA security wait times and when they peak
Check live MIA security waits, find the checkpoint for your gate, and see every checkpoint's published hours.

MIA’s busiest days are the holiday peaks the airport names in advance, around Christmas and New Year’s, when it forecasts more than 190,000 passengers a day. On any day, check MIA’s live checkpoint wait times, then match an open checkpoint to your gate, not the shortest number on the screen.
MIA’s wait-times page gives real-time updates for each checkpoint. Allow separate time for airline check-in and the walks to security and to your gate. If your gate isn’t assigned yet, check your airline’s MIA concourse listing and confirm the gate with your airline or MIA’s online flight information before committing to a queue.
Pick a checkpoint that serves your gate
All times below are the airport’s published checkpoint hours. They aren’t promises that a lane will stay open during a disruption. Our security directory has each checkpoint’s PreCheck and family lanes, and our terminal map helps you find the right part of Level 2.
| Your gate | Checkpoints MIA lists for it | Published hours |
|---|---|---|
| D1–D60 | 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. DFIS is also listed for North Terminal D. | 1: 4 a.m.–8:15 p.m. 2: 3:30 a.m.–11:45 p.m. 3: 4 a.m.–9:45 p.m. 4: 4 a.m.–8:15 p.m. 5: 4 a.m.–10:45 p.m. DFIS: 5:15 a.m.–9:30 p.m. |
| E1–E33 | 4, 5 | 4: 4 a.m.–8:15 p.m. 5: 4 a.m.–10:45 p.m. |
| F1–F23 | 6 | 6: 3:30 a.m.–10:45 p.m. |
| G1–G19 | 7 | 4 a.m.–8:15 p.m. |
| H3–H17 or J2–J18 | 8, 9, 10 | 8: 4 a.m.–8:15 p.m. 9: open 24 hours 10: 4:15 a.m.–7:15 p.m. |
Checkpoint 5 sits in Central Terminal but also serves D. Checkpoint 4 sits in North Terminal but also serves E. Those two options matter when one entrance is busy. MIA lists DFIS for North Terminal D without a numbered gate range, so ask airport staff whether it suits your departure before walking there.
MIA lists TSA PreCheck at Checkpoints 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 during each checkpoint’s published hours.
For a late D departure, Checkpoint 2’s 11:45 p.m. closing is the latest of any D checkpoint. No checkpoint for D, E, F or G is listed as open 24 hours.
The days MIA says are busiest
MIA forecasts its peaks in its holiday travel advisories. Its most recent winter forecast named five peak days, each above 190,000 passengers: one in the week before Christmas, the two days after Christmas and two days just after New Year’s Day. An earlier forecast picked out the Friday before New Year’s Day and the Thursday and Friday after it. Those forecasts cover the whole airport and name no checkpoint, and MIA publishes no hour-by-hour pattern, so the live page is your only read on the time of day.
The day after Christmas, a CBS Miami crew filmed a TSA line reaching the American ticketing counters. A line can run that far past its barriers, so check the live wait again when you reach Level 2 and follow the signs and staff to where the line really starts. For a later departure, open the live page again closer to the time you enter security, since it shows the current update when you open it.
On a busy holiday, MIA has advised arriving three hours before your flight to allow for parking, airline check-in and screening. It has also warned that its garages can near capacity on peak days, and our parking guide lists the Economy Park-and-Ride and every other lot with its rate.
At the airport, check the gate before the queue
- Find your gate. Use your boarding pass and MIA’s online flight information. An airline can use more than one concourse.
- Match its letter and number to the table. MIA’s main ticketing and security frontage is on Level 2. A checkpoint near your feet may serve a different concourse.
- Compare eligible checkpoints. Open MIA’s live wait page and check the posted hours. If a checkpoint or lane has changed on site, follow staff instructions.
- Allow for the walk after screening. Concourse D is long and has a Skytrain above it. E20–E33 are in a separate satellite building reached by the E Train. Our terminal guide shows both routes.
If you’re changing planes, the right route depends on your arriving flight, bags and onward gate. Use our connections guide before assuming you must leave the secure area or can cross between concourses. If a checkpoint’s hours appear to end before your departure and the table offers no other entrance for your gate, ask your airline or airport staff which screening route they are using. The published list alone doesn’t answer that case.
