Flying into MIA for a Fort Lauderdale cruise? Compare transfer choices, check your ship's terminal, and avoid the PortMiami mix-up.

Cruise terminal · Port Everglades

At MIA now? Check that your booking says **Port Everglades**, then find your ship’s terminal before you arrange a ride. PortMiami is a different cruise port. A Miami flight can work for a Fort Lauderdale sailing, but you need to allow for the trip north and the time between landing and leaving the airport.

Uber’s route page gives a historical average of **49 minutes, 30 miles and $60** for a ride from MIA to Port Everglades. That’s an average of past trips, so the price and arrival time in the app when you book are the ones to plan around.

## Should you fly into MIA for this cruise?

If you haven’t booked, price flights to MIA and to Fort Lauderdale, then add ground transport for your party and any overnight stay. An MIA fare is only cheaper if it still is after the drive north. Check the return flights separately, too. Your arrival and departure airports needn’t be the same.

MIA is easier to justify when you arrive before sailing day or have enough room in your plans for a disrupted flight. A small fare saving is a poor trade if you land on sailing day with little time left. No official source gives a universal safe connection time from an MIA landing to a Port Everglades ship. Your cruise line’s check-in instructions and deadline are the numbers to use.

With a tight deadline at MIA, skip the fare comparison and check your ship’s instructions now. If the latest arrival estimate threatens check-in, contact your cruise line while you’re still at the airport.

## Choose the transfer with the whole trip in mind

Uber’s route page compares a direct ride with rail and bus. Its rail and bus figures stop short of the cruise terminal.

| Choice | What Uber’s route page says | What you still need to check |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Direct Uber ride | The 49-minute, $60 average above | The fare, pickup estimate, road arrival estimate and your ship’s terminal. |
| Public train | About 1 hour 21 minutes and $19–$24 from MIA to Fort Lauderdale. | Current timetable, fare and the separate trip from the train to your terminal. |
| Public bus | Lines 01 and 40, about 2 hours and $11 to Port Everglades. | Current service, transfers, stop location and the way from that stop to your terminal. |

For a same-day sailing, a direct ride avoids a rail or bus connection. Still, Uber says its arrival estimates aren’t guaranteed. Traffic and the wait for a car can change your plan. Compare the app’s quote with a metered taxi once you know when you can leave the airport. MIA publishes no taxi fare to Port Everglades, and our [MIA taxi guide](https://miaairportguide.com/transport/taxi/) gives the meter rates. The [ride-app guide](https://miaairportguide.com/transport/ride-app/) covers where to meet your driver.

Rail can suit a less hurried arrival. Take the free [MIA Mover](https://miaairportguide.com/transport/mia-mover/) from the terminal’s 3rd level, between the Dolphin and Flamingo garages. It runs about every 3 minutes to the Miami Intermodal Center, where [Tri-Rail](https://miaairportguide.com/transport/tri-rail/) leaves for Fort Lauderdale. MIA lists Tri-Rail round trips at $3.50 to $9.25, depending on how many zones you cross. The train stops in Fort Lauderdale, though, and you still need a ride from the station to your terminal. Tri-Rail publishes the timetable, so check it before you count on a departure.

For a shuttle, start with your cruise line and ask whether it runs a transfer **from MIA to Port Everglades for your sailing**. With an independent operator, get the total price and what happens if your flight is late before you pay. One private company, Fort Lauderdale Airport Shuttle, lists its own flat rate from MIA to Port Everglades at $95 to $115 for a sedan carrying one or two passengers, with a 45 to 50 minute ride. Miami-Dade’s advice about cruise-line shuttles from MIA appears on its PortMiami page. It does not confirm a shuttle to Port Everglades.

## From your MIA arrival to the right ship

- **Open your cruise documents first.** Confirm the port, ship, terminal and your cruise line’s latest check-in deadline. If the terminal is missing or has changed, check with the cruise line. You can also check Port Everglades’ cruise-terminal page. Don’t substitute a generic port address for your ship’s destination.
- **Work from the time you can leave MIA, not your landing time.** If your bag doesn’t come off the carousel, our [delayed or lost baggage guide](https://miaairportguide.com/guides/delayed-or-lost-baggage-at-miami-international/) lists each airline’s baggage office and what to file before you leave.
- **Give the driver your ship’s terminal.** Enter that destination when you request the ride and confirm it with the driver before setting off. If a shuttle operator supplies the ride, confirm the same drop-off with them. One traveler on Dockside Travel reported cruisers losing time after going to the wrong part of the port.
- **If you reach the wrong area,** ask port staff or your cruise line for the correct destination before making another move with your bags.

## If the plan starts to slip

A late flight or slow baggage claim changes the calculation. Check your flight status with your airline, your cruise line’s deadline and the live road estimate together. If the numbers no longer fit, call the cruise line using the contact details in your booking. Only your cruise line can tell you whether the ship will wait or accept a late arrival.

If your ride falls through, compare another live ride quote with the taxi option before deciding. If you planned to use rail, check the next departure and the final leg again. In a Sea Trippin’ w/ Kim and Scott video about the **opposite direction**, from Fort Lauderdale airport toward MIA, the couple reported missing both a shuttle and a train.

For the trip home through MIA, make a fresh plan from your ship to the airport. The outbound Uber average does not tell you when you’ll leave the ship or how long a return pickup will take. Confirm your cruise line’s departure instructions before choosing a flight.

If your documents say **PortMiami**, use our [PortMiami cruise-transfer guide](https://miaairportguide.com/transport/cruise-transfers/) instead. Confirm the port name before you follow any directions from MIA.
