# Miami airport taxi fares: the flat fares have ended, here's the meter

Miami-Dade scrapped MIA's taxi flat fares. What the meter charges from the airport, what a ride costs by distance, PortMiami, and the $15 minimum.

The taxi stand

[Every way into town, compared](https://miaairportguide.com/to/): Pick where you are going: time, cost, and the first and last departure for each way.

**Every taxi from MIA now runs on the meter.** Miami-Dade County’s taxicab rules say “All flat fare rates are eliminated. The meter rate applies now to all trips,” and that includes the airport’s Blue Cab program. Trips from MIA have a **$15 minimum**. On MIA’s published meter, a 10-mile ride comes to about $39, before waiting time and tolls.

You may still see a $27 fare to PortMiami, or flat-rate beach zones, on older pages, including one county page. Those flat fares no longer apply.

## What the meter charges

MIA’s taxi page lists these rates:

| Charge | Amount |
| --- | --- |
| First sixth of a mile | $2.95 |
| Each further sixth of a mile, up to one mile | $0.85 |
| Each sixth of a mile after the first mile | $0.55 |
| Waiting or slow traffic | $0.40 a minute ($24 an hour) |
| Airport origination fee | $2.00 |
| Minimum fare from MIA | $15 |
| SUV or van | Up to 30% above the meter |

Tolls are added at the SunPass rate. The county says there’s no charge per extra passenger, per bag, for a wheelchair, a service animal or a child car seat. Tipping is optional but customary.

## What a ride costs by distance

| Distance from MIA | Meter fare with the $2.00 airport fee |
| --- | --- |
| 1 mile | $15, the minimum |
| 5 miles | About $22 |
| 10 miles | About $39 |
| 15 miles | About $55 |
| 20 miles | About $72 |

These figures are the meter rates above worked through for each distance. Waiting time in traffic, tolls and the SUV surcharge come on top. MIA doesn’t publish road distances to neighborhoods, so use the distance your map app gives for your address.

PortMiami is the one trip both ends put a number on: PortMiami’s FAQ says 7.1 miles and MIA says about 9 miles. On the meter, that works out to about $30 to $36.

## Finding the taxi stand

Taxis wait on the **arrivals level**, outside the baggage claim areas, at the lower-level curb. Uniformed Miami-Dade Aviation Department staff work the stands. You don’t need a reservation. Ignore anyone offering a ride inside the terminal. Need a wheelchair-accessible taxi? Ask at the curb, and see our [accessible taxi page](https://miaairportguide.com/transport/accessible-taxi-supershuttle/).

## Comparing with a ride app

Ride apps pick up on Level 1 or Level 2, at the door your app shows. MIA publishes no ride-app fares, but the app quotes its price before you confirm, so set that quote against the distance table above. FIGID Press, riding alone into downtown Miami, filmed passing up an Uber or Lyft at about $30 for the $2.25 train. Our [ride app page](https://miaairportguide.com/transport/ride-app/) explains where to wait.

## If the fare looks wrong

Ask for a receipt: the county says you’re entitled to one. Note the cab’s number and the driver’s registration on the dashboard. For a refund of an overcharge, use Miami-Dade’s for-hire transportation complaint form.
