Spring break travel

**Arrive three hours before your flight, and expect the heaviest days in the second half of March.** One MIA spring break release projected a 33-day season from March 6 to April 4, with more than 5.7 million passengers. It put the busiest week at March 16 to 23, at nearly 180,000 passengers a day, around the start of Miami-Dade County’s school break.

## The busiest weeks fall in the second half of March

| Period | What MIA has reported |
| --- | --- |
| Early March | Traffic at MIA starts to climb as colleges across Florida and the East Coast begin their spring breaks |
| Mid to late March | The peak, when Miami-Dade grade schools start their break, around March 21 or 22 |
| Easter weekend | When Easter falls in late March, MIA has included the Easter weekend travel in the same busy stretch |

Dates move each year with school calendars and Easter. Check MIA’s news page in early March for this year’s forecast.

## Allow three hours, and pick your checkpoint by gate

- **Check in online before you leave home,** as MIA asks, so the airline counter isn’t one more line in your three hours.
- **Use MIA’s live wait times** to find the fastest checkpoint that serves your gate. Our guide to [MIA security wait times](https://miaairportguide.com/guides/mia-security-wait-times-when-they-peak/) matches each checkpoint to its concourses.
- **Medicine, documents, a charger and a change of clothes** go in your carry-on, MIA’s spring tips say, in case a delay keeps you from your checked bag.

[Our arrival-time guide](https://miaairportguide.com/guides/how-early-should-you-arrive-at-miami-international/) works out your time from your airline’s check-in area and concourse.

## On the roads, park remote or get dropped off

In its spring break advisories, MIA has pointed drivers to half-price parking at the remote Economy Park and Ride lot, and to valet at door 2 and door 20 in the Dolphin and Flamingo garages. Our [parking page](https://miaairportguide.com/parking/) has every garage and lot, with rates.

- **For a pickup,** wait at the free Cell Phone Waiting Lot off LeJeune Road and NW 31st Street until your passenger is at the curb. Our guide to [the MIA cell phone lot](https://miaairportguide.com/guides/miami-airport-cell-phone-lot-where-wait-arrival/) explains how to reach it.
- Without a car, Metrorail reaches MIA from downtown for $2.25. Our [transport page](https://miaairportguide.com/transport/) sets it beside the buses, taxis and ride apps.
- **Before an early flight,** a night at a [hotel near the airport](https://miaairportguide.com/hotels/) keeps you off the spring break roads that morning. Our guide to [hotels near MIA with a free shuttle](https://miaairportguide.com/guides/airport-hotels-near-mia-with-free-shuttle/) compares the shuttles by their published hours.
