How early should you arrive at Miami International?

Plan your MIA arrival by flight, airline check-in area and concourse, with published security checkpoint hours and early-flight options.

Arrive at least two hours before a domestic flight or three hours before an international flight. That’s MIA’s general advice. For a busy travel period, MIA has advised three hours before any flight to cover parking, airline check-in and security. Your airline’s counter, your gate and the checkpoint hours decide how to use that time.

If you’re leaving soon, open our airline directory for your check-in area, then our security page for the checkpoint serving your gate. Check your airline’s app or boarding pass for the assigned gate. MIA’s checkpoint page has a map showing the checkpoint nearest your gate. A short line now doesn’t tell you when your airline will stop accepting bags or close boarding.

Find your airline’s counter before you choose a checkpoint

At MIA, the letter on the check-in counter can differ from the letter on your gate. The terminal map groups D in North Terminal, E through G in Central Terminal, and H and J in South Terminal. British Airways, for one, checks in at D and boards in E.

Airline MIA’s listed check-in area Listed gate concourse
American Airlines D/E, counters 001–113 D or E
Alaska Airlines E, counters 211–214 E
British Airways D, counters 116–124 E
Frontier Airlines F, counters 223–236 F
Southwest G, counters 383–392 G
Delta Airlines H, counters 430–441 H
United Airlines H, counters 520–529 G or H
Turkish H, counters 560–569 J
Air Europa J, counters 317–324 F

The full airline directory covers the other carriers and their listed counters. Use your airline’s instructions on travel day if an assignment changes. If you’re checking a bag or need a document check, go to the check-in area first, even when your gate is elsewhere. Ask your airline when its counter opens and when it stops accepting bags before choosing an earlier arrival.

Which MIA checkpoint will be open?

These are the airport’s published checkpoint hours, grouped by the gates each checkpoint serves. They are opening windows, not predicted waits or promises that you can finish check-in at any hour. See our security page for each checkpoint’s listing.

Gate concourse Checkpoints serving those gates Published hours
D, North Terminal 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 1: 4 a.m.–8:15 p.m.
2: 3:30 a.m.–11:45 p.m.
3: 4 a.m.–9:45 p.m.
4: 4 a.m.–8:15 p.m.
5: 4 a.m.–10:45 p.m.
E, Central Terminal 4, 5 4: 4 a.m.–8:15 p.m.
5: 4 a.m.–10:45 p.m.
F, Central Terminal 6 3:30 a.m.–10:45 p.m.
G, Central Terminal 7 4 a.m.–8:15 p.m.
H or J, South Terminal 8, 9, 10 8: 4 a.m.–8:15 p.m.
9: open 24 hours
10: 4:15 a.m.–7:15 p.m.

MIA also lists a separate DFIS checkpoint for North Terminal D, from 5:15 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Its listing doesn’t establish that it’s an alternative entrance for every departing passenger. Follow the signs and staff directions for your flight.

For a flight near a checkpoint’s closing time, don’t assume you can enter another concourse and walk across. The published hours don’t establish an after-hours route from G or F, for example. Check MIA’s checkpoint map and ask your airline or airport staff which entrance to use.

An early flight changes the order of your morning

The table above shows which checkpoint opens first for your gate. With checked bags, confirm the airline’s bag-drop hours before planning to stand at a checkpoint at opening time.

If your counter or checkpoint isn’t open yet, these before-security spots are listed as open early. Café Versailles in E is the one for a cafecito.

Spot, before security Where Listed hours
Pharmabox (vending machine) D, near D15, Level 2 departures 24 hours
Starbucks D, near D32, Level 2 departures 4 a.m.–10:30 p.m.
Subway E, Level 2 departures 24 hours
Café Versailles E, Level 2 departures 4 a.m.–10 p.m.
Dunkin’ F, Level 2 departures 24 hours
Gilbert’s Food Bar (Pre-Security) South Terminal, for H or J 4:30 a.m.–8:30 p.m.

Getting from security to your gate

After security, check the gate again. Concourse D runs a mile, and its Skytrain has four stations above the concourse. Our North Terminal guide shows which gate groups each station serves. In E, gates E20–E33 sit in a separate satellite building reached by the E Train. Our Central Terminal guide shows that route. Neither train is the MIA Mover to ground transportation.

One traveler filmed a transfer from D48 to E8 and had to identify the D–E connector instead of following the terminal exit. If you’re arriving on another flight, especially from abroad or on separate tickets, use our connections guide and check the airline’s bag instructions. The two-hour and three-hour advice above covers starting your trip at MIA and promises nothing about connection times.

MIA directs D and E passengers toward Dolphin Garage and E through J passengers toward Flamingo Garage. The remote MIA Economy Park-and-Ride runs its shuttle to the terminals 24 hours a day, so allow time for that ride before airline check-in. The parking guide has every garage and its rate.

Coming from the Rental Car Center or the Miami Intermodal Center, you’ll ride the free MIA Mover to its Level 3 station between the Dolphin and Flamingo garages. MIA lists it from 5 a.m. until about 4:41 a.m. the next morning, so a very early start can fall in that gap.

If you’re already running late, check your airline’s bag cutoff and boarding deadline first. Then check your gate, the checkpoint hours and MIA’s checkpoint map. If the published checkpoint serving your gate is closed, ask airline or airport staff for the usable entrance.
