Yes, solid food can go through security at MIA. TSA, which runs the checkpoints here, allows solid food in your carry-on or checked bag. Liquid or gel food over 3.4 ounces can’t go in a carry-on, but formula, breast milk and baby food are allowed in larger amounts. TSA’s food guidance gives the answer item by item. MIA’s own security page adds rules for liquids and water bottles.

Decide before you join the line

In your bag or hand What MIA publishes Your move
A drink or liquid food Carry-on containers must be 3.4 ounces or less, in one quart-size bag. Drink a bigger one or leave it behind, and buy another past security.
A water bottle Water bottles are not allowed. The page says nothing about empty ones. Finish a full bottle before you queue.
Baby food or food for a medical condition TSA allows formula, breast milk and baby food over 3.4 ounces in a carry-on. They are screened separately. Take them out of your bag at the checkpoint, and arrange other medical screening with TSA, as below.

For food you need for a medical condition, the Greater Miami tourism office’s accessibility guide says TSA offers assistance and special procedures. It sends you to TSA passenger support before travel, or to an officer at the checkpoint, and says to bring any medical documentation.

MIA warns that TSA has no provision for returning a banned item once you leave it at a checkpoint. If you’d rather eat than lose it, MIA’s official app shows current checkpoint wait times, which tells you whether there’s time to finish before screening. Our security checkpoint guide lists each checkpoint’s published hours.

If you still need a meal or water

MIA has food businesses both before and after security. Our food and shops directory lists every restaurant and café by terminal, so you can see what’s past your checkpoint before you hand over a meal. Once you’re through, our water refill page shows where to fill a bottle.
